I have a Blue/white G3 at home and I need to upgrade, but can't afford to get what I would really like (a G5). I have 21" apple monitor, keyboard and mouse. And, I use all the graphics software: Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Does anyone think this the lowest model of the mini macs is a good purchase for a couple of years? I know it will be out of date quicker than some of my other options. But, my monitor is really good, so I think I shouldn't go the emac or imac route. Any suggestions or thoughts out there? I appreciate it.
I have a Mini, and I love it. I am not a graphics guy, and can't attest to the Mini's power at photoshop, but I do push the Mini to it's limits from time to time. I would sugest going to the Apple store and using one to see if it works for you. I'm not sure what the specs are for your G3 Video card, but this is the only Achiles heal to the Mini. It sounds like the new units are shipping (soon, if not now), and I think they have upgraded video cards. This might be just what you need (until you can save $$ for a PM). If you buy the Mini, beef up the RAM- it makes such a difference in performance.

I think theres a reason :apple: didnt notify the new iMac owners for 10.6.7 update, unlike in the new Macbook Pro
Its because all 2011 iMac will be eligilbe for upgrade to Lion for free, or at least with discount, maybe $29 only via Mac App Store so they can directly check who eligible for one and whos not. If you want to get the shiny retail box, it may cost $129.
That should be it .. so I wouldnt worry too much about Lion, lets hope Im not wrong okay :D
You sound so sure about your speculation. Since you're so sure about everything, care to give me some advice about which sandwich I should eat tomorrow? Will I be better off having the tuna or the turkey?

I just posted a bunch of my apple vinyl banners on ebay, but one in particular almost made me cry when I posted it. It is a 4ft x 4ft Thomas Edison vinyl banner. It used to hang over my head every day back in 1998 when I was selling macs at a compusa. I always felt like he was watching me and encouraging me to introduce people to Macs (mostly iMacs) for the first time. One day I was asked to take down Edison, Buzz, Ghandi and Hitchcock and put them in the trash compactor out back. Naturally, I said to hell with that idea and snuck them to my car. How could any Mac fan ever be expected to destroy anything so beautiful. Well, I got caught with them, but the manager let me keep Buzz and Edison and he took the other two. Now I put Edison on ebay and I'm already regretting it. Did I do the right thing?

No. It's not related to any dislike between Apple and Oracle. I believe it was timed purposely to keep Java applications out of the new Mac App Store.
Don't forget the IcedTea project. This is related to OpenJDK, and already has a working Mac implementation.
My take on the announcement is that Apple is ensuring that OSX will be more open to installation of such software and not requiring Apple's developers to reimplement versions of Java as they come out. I suspect Apple wants to use their development staff for Apple-specific software.
I don't think the Mac App Store has any relevance to the discussion.
Oracle's announcements at the JavaOne 2010 meeting seems to promise bringing Java as a platform back from the dead -- something Sun was having problems doing. The Oracle promise of rapid progress of the Java platform would make it difficult/expensive for Apple to keep up and still be a viable platform for Java development.
I think Jobs' announcement is a positive sign.

yes, that's exactly what I did. I took an external 1TB WD small form factor drive (it houses a 2.5" HDD), created 200GB and 800GB partitions, then installed Lion on the smaller one. I still haven't begun to use the larger partition, however :D
BTW, has anyone gotten iStat Menus 2.0 running on Lion? I can't seem to get it working correctly. It downloads the sensors, but when I click on any of them in the preference pane, I'm told that they can't be loaded.

Hi,
I have an ftp upload problem. Ive had it ever since I bought my first mac, a powerbook, a year ago. I first trying using several free ftp programs (+ Transmit), but everytime i would upload a file to a folder it would just freeze immediately. so i went and bought Cute FTP Mac cause the demo rid this problem, but not entirely. It freezes immediately, but when I close connection and connect again, everything works. So now i have gotten into the habit of 'uploading, it freezing, me closing and re-opening the connection', and then it working. This is a really long and annoying way to go about things. Anybody have a clue as to what is going on?

If the photos are on the SSD drive, then yes they will launch faster than if on the HDD. Now that said, if they are just average say 2MB JPG photos the difference will not be huge. If it is a very hi-res photo say 10MB JPG the difference will be more noticeable.
Makes sense . . thanks
edit: just read this article which explains it quite well

The Northern Line isn't too bad on that front. The worst line is definitely the Metropolitan, on which you sometimes find it difficult to stay in your seat it jumps around so much.
LOL :) Must get pretty bad at rush hour then; people standing up and all that...

Look in your book for exactly what you're supposed to use for #import. You may have made a mistake.
I'm not sure, but #import <Fraction.h> seems wrong to me. If Fraction.h were a system-provided class, it would be correct. But it's a developer-created class, so #import "Fraction.h" seems more sensible to me, and is what I've always used when referring to class headers I create.
Post your code.
No one with any programming experience would believe anyone (beginner or experienced) who says there are no compilation errors, unless the code has actually been compiled without errors. You may be right, but we need to see the evidence of the compiler.
Thanks! Your answer helped. So now I know that <**> are only for system provided classes. I used quotes for Fraction.h and it worked.
The example that I used had everything dumped in the main .m file along with the main function.

I would go with a 3DS. I am using a DS Lite still but the new Pokemon is great. I haven't played since red/blue/green/yellow days. Lots of cool upgrades while still feeling very at home. :)
